Meeting Horiren the First and Hiro
It has been three years since HorirenⅠ came to me to learn Japanese painting. She studies so eagerly, more than anyone else who has ever come to learn from me. One of my closest friends, Horiyoshi III, whom I greatly respect, is constantly in pursuit of new ideas regarding his craft. I feel the same way about HorirenⅠ and Horiyoshi III.
She is indeed a professional tattoo artist, however she does not know a great deal about Japanese painting. It is roughly 20 miles (32 kilometers) for her to commute to my house, so I was a tad concerned that it might be somewhat difficult for her to visit me, but she has proven herself to be much more dedicated than I thought.
If something happens to me HorirenⅠ always comes by, and she sometimes brings her friends along as well if I have some problems. She has become a very important person in my life.
I’ m really looking forward to seeing how her painting improves.
HorirenⅠ has a good network of friends and contacts. A great help to HorirenⅠ has been her photographer, Hiro. He speaks English well and has been very beneficial in our dealings overseas. He also helped me to duplicate my paintings. For the past 40 years, I haven’ t tidied up my artwork. I simply put them onto my shelves in a rough fashion. HorirenⅠ and her friends took the time to photograph and index everything. It was such a hard job, but thanks to them everything is now tidy and in order.
I’ m also happy that they took care of my paintings, more than I ever have in the past.
If HorirenⅠ and Hiro take care of the next generation, continue to work hard, and maintain their passion, then they will surely succeed. I wish them this success.
